Student Usage Scenarios
These are some scenarios of how students can use our system.
Student working in this building
The student would go to Lab 160. From there they can:
- Use MS Windows directly on a PC
- Use ssh on MS Windows for shell to access their account on loki
- Use sftp on MS Windows to transfer files to/from the PC and their account on loki
- Use X-Windows icon on MS Windows for X-Windows access to their account on loki
- Use an X-Terminal (on the wall near the Windows) for X-Windows access to
their account on loki
The student could also use Lab 162 during its open hours which are
posted on the 162 door.
Student working at home from Linux/UNIX
Because you are working on Linux/UNIX you should immediately be
able to access and use loki in all its forms. In addition,
almost all of the software that is available on loki can be
installed, for free, on your local computer.
See the basic ssh information for more
details.
Student working at home from MS Windows
Students can access loki over a network using the full Internet name:
loki.cs.kent.edu. Because they are on MS Windows they must install
some software, such as ssh and Cygwin, before they can easily access
loki.
- Install an ssh client and have secure
shell access
- Install an ssh client and in addition
have sftp access
- Install Cygwin and download a batch
file that is setup for X-Window access to our machines
- Use Cygwin to work with Linux/UNIX software and utilies locally,
such as g++ (utilities/program must be installed in Cygwin)
- Use the ssh client with X-Windows tunneling enabled, run an
X-Server locally and have the applications appear on the local
X-Server
- In the near future remotely and securely mount their loki account files on their home
In general, anything that is or can be setup on the PC's running
MS Windows in our labs can be setup on your home PC.
Student with a laptop
The student can go to Lab 160 an use the network ports on the wall.
From their they are just like a student working locally.
