Flying to Milwaukee
Milwaukee is a major US city and its General Mitchell International Airport (http://mitchelairport.com)
is served by many US airlines. However, it is not a "hub" for any of
the major airlines and it only has international flights to Canada, Mexico, and
the Caribbean. Here are some tips on getting to Milwaukee:
Traveling within the US:
All major US airlines (American, Delta, Continental, Northwest, United, US
Airways) serve Milwaukee. Midwest Airlines (smaller, but sizeable) is based
here and has direct flights to a number of US cities. Discount carriers include
AirTran, ATA, and Frontier. Prices are usually quite reasonable.
Traveling from outside the US:
To reach Milwaukee, you will almost certainly have to fly on a major airline to
a "hub" airport (e.g. Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Newark,
Cincinnati, Atlanta, Toronto) and then travel to Milwaukee on another flight.
The exception to this rule will be if you go to Chicago, which is only 90 miles
(150 km) to the south. From there, you can also take a bus directly to downtown
Milwaukee (http://www.wisconsincoach.com/mil-chi.htm)
from O'Hare airport, or even rent a car and drive yourself. I (Ethan Munson)
find it much simpler to just take another flight, even from Chicago.
Getting from the airport to your
hotel
You can reach your hotel from Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport using either a
rented car, a taxi or a shuttle service. The shuttle service provided by
Airport Connection (www.mkelimo.com)
is the cheapest (about $10 one-way to downtown hotels). They have a desk in the
baggage claim area of the airport. Car rental probably doesn't make sense
unless you are part of a group or plan to use a hotel outside the downtown
area, because parking around UW-Milwaukee can be difficult.
